01 / ABOUT
Benjamin Scheer
Benjamin Scheer is an American composer whose chamber, orchestral, and vocal music has been presented by leading festivals and institutions in the United States and Europe, including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Music@Menlo, the Moritzburg Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, Seattle Chamber Music Society, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He was a composition fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.
Recent seasons have included a series of major chamber music commissions and performances. Scheer's string quartet The Funambulist's Double, commissioned by the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, received its world premiere in 2022. In 2024, he served as Composer-in-Residence at the Moritzburg Festival in Dresden, Germany, where The Funambulist's Double received its European premiere alongside the world premiere of his commissioned string octet, Nachts im Monströsensaal. His music was described by German critics as "imaginative," with particular praise for Nachts im Monströsensaal for its evocative use of the "Dresden Amen" melody, and its "strings that hovered like veils of mist coalesced into an impulsive, almost ghostly activity."
In 2025, Music@Menlo commissioned Scheer to compose the piano quartet These Shrouded Hills, which received its world premiere that March. The work will also be presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center during its 2026-27 season. His duo Pantomime for violin and viola received its world premiere at Seattle Chamber Music Society's 2026 Summer Festival.
Scheer's music has been performed by artists including Chad Hoopes, Jan Vogler, Benjamin Beilman, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, Stella Chen, the FLUX Quartet, and Avenue Azure of Ensemble Klang, among others.
Scheer is a faculty member at Southern Methodist University's Meadows School of the Arts, where he teaches composition and music theory. He holds degrees in composition from the Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, and the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts.
